The Guckley or Kuckley is a striking rock formation of Ahr Hills at Laach in the local church Mayschoß in the district Ahrweiler in Rhineland-Palatinate .

etymology

The ending -ley means something like rock and is part of the name of a large number of rock formations in the near and far vicinity of the Guckley, the most famous of which is probably the Loreley above the Rhine near Sankt Goarshausen . The term Guckley could on the one hand stand for a rock looking out of the landscape, on the other hand it could also denote a rock with a beautiful view of the surrounding landscape.

geography

location

The Guckley is close to the hole mill just south of the place where the national highway 267 to Lochmühlerley , the back mentioned by Ümerich or Laacher mountains south to Ahr pulls down. There it forces the river onto a large, south-sweeping loop .

geology

The Guckley is a volcanic remnant, the hard rock of which was weathered and washed out of the surrounding Grauwacke . The nepheline basanite is dated to an age of 46 ± 2 mya . The parts of the former volcanic vent that now protrude from the ground were at least 200 meters below the surface of the earth.

Natural allocation

The Guckley belongs to the natural spatial main unit group Eastern Eifel (No. 27) with the main unit Ahreifel (272), sub-unit Middle Ahrtal (272.2) with the natural area Recher Ahrengtal (272.21).
