features
Macroscopic features
Guepiniopsis buccina has cylindrical fruit bodies with a plate or cup-shaped indentation at the tip of a firm, gelatinous texture and a height of up to 10 mm. Their diameter is 3–9 mm. The structures, which are ribbed on the underside, grow in tufts from the substrate and have a root-like mycelial stalk . Their color ranges between yellow and orange. The fruit layer is limited to the inside of the cup.
Microscopic features
The hyphae of Guepiniopsis buccina do not have buckles . The hyaline hyphae of the inner flesh are branched, thin-walled and septate. Their diameter is 2–5 µm. The thin-walled basidiospores are spherical to kidney-shaped, have a small tip and measure 10–16 × 5–7 μm.
distribution
Guepiniopsis buccina is distributed in the Holarctic (Europe via Japan to North America) as well as in Australia and the American double continent. The species inhabits submeridional to boreal climates, but prefers suboceanic and temperate climates .
ecology
Guepiniopsis buccina is a saprobiont and weakness parasite that can be found on both dead wood and dying plant tissue. The species prefers hazel bushes , hazel hornbeam forests and light forest edges as well as gaps in deciduous forests in warm, hilly and submontane locations. As a rule, branches and twigs that are still barked are attacked. The spores germinate through germ tubes , fruiting bodies appear in spring and summer.
