Guillaume Michel Jérôme Meiffren de Laugier, Baron of Chartrouse (born September 28, 1772 in Arles , † September 27, 1843 ibid) was a French politician and ornithologist .

Live and act

During the French Revolution he was part of the Légion des Allobroges . On June 13, 1811, he was appointed Baron of Chartrouse by Napoleon Bonaparte . In 1822 a commission was formed in Arles to promote the expansion of the amphitheater and the ancient theater . This expansion was only implemented under the management of Meiffren de Laugier . He became mayor of Arles in 1824, an office he held until the July Revolution of 1830 . From 1829 to 1834 he was a Member of Parliament and General Councilor for Arles. Other infrastructure programs such as the road from Salon-de-Provence to Nîmes and the deepening of the canal between Arles and Port-de-Bouc in order to clear the Rhone Valley on the left side were also implemented at his instigation. We owe the restoration of many old monuments to him. For example, in 1822 he played a key role in the discovery of the famous Vénus d'Arles , which is now in the Louvre in Paris. On May 19, 1825 he was awarded the title Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur .

On November 5, 1829, he took the place of the 3rd arrondissement of the Bouches-du-Rhône for the deceased Jean-Baptiste Florentin Gabriel Meyran de Lagoy (1764-1829). In the election he prevailed with 127 votes against Marie-Joseph de Gras de Preville (1755-1849), who got only 75 votes. On June 30, 1830, he was re-elected with 144 votes. This time he prevailed against the mayor of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence Pierre Blain, who received 57 votes. On July 5, 1831, he won the election again. This time he got 96 against 82 votes for Jean Boulouvard (d. 1843).

Ornithology

When Coenraad Jacob Temminck visited Paris in January 1820, he paid a visit to Baron Meiffren de Laugier. Since Meiffren de Laugier had an important collection of exotic birds, he steered the conversation towards a project that had been on his mind for some time. Edme-Louis Daubenton (1730–1785) had produced 973 bird tablets for Georges-Louis Leclerc de Buffons (1707–1788) Histoire Naturelle, générale et particulière, avec la description du Cabinet du Roi . Meiffren de Laugier wanted to complete this table, but he lacked the expertise to write the text for it. Temminck was immediately enthusiastic about the idea and so he hired his favorite illustrators Jean-Gabriel Prêtre (1768–1849) and Nicolas Huet II (1770–1830) to illustrate the birds he had put together with hand-colored plates. On September 1, 1820, the first delivery of the multi-volume work appeared under the names of both authors. Even if the volumes indicate the year 1838, 102 deliveries were made between 1820 and 1839. In a publication by Charles Davies Sherborn from 1898, he determined the exact publication dates of the individual deliveries. In 1922 Erwin Stresemann expanded this with findings from the Museum of Natural History in Berlin . Charles Payraudeau (1786–1865) published in 1826 some critical comments on the actual storks . In 1836 Meiffren de Laugier published a catalog with all the birds from his collection. Today parts of his collection are in the Natural History Museum at Tring , in the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle and in the Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin.

Dedication names

In 1819, Louis Pierre Vieillot named the lark chicken ( Ortyxelos meiffrenii ) in honor of Meiffren de Laugier . Meiffren de Laugier had the type specimen for the first description in his extensive collection. Vieillot also published Trochilus lazulus from the baron's collection. Julian Pender Hume and Michael P. Walters called the hummingbird Laugier's Sabrewing and see it as a questionable taxon . However, many authors see this name as a synonym for the red-tailed sword wing ( Campylopterus falcatus ( Swainson , 1821)).
