Gunther Oschmann

Gunther Oschmann (born November 29, 1940 in Nuremberg ) is a German media entrepreneur . He is a partner in the media company Müller Medien, through which he holds stakes in more than 60 regional television and radio providers in Germany and Austria, as well as in telephone directory, newspaper and children's book publishers.

Life

After studying business administration in Munich and Nuremberg, Oschmann joined the Nuremberg telephone book publishing house of his grandfather Hans Müller as a limited partner in 1962 . Three years later, after Müller's death, he took over the position of managing director of the company and finally became the sole general partner in 1971 . The publishing house expanded significantly under his leadership. In 1974 the Düsseldorf address book publishing house Schwann was taken over, in 1978 the Osang publishing house in Bad Honnef followed and in 1981 75 percent of the shares in the Hamburg youth book publishing house Tessloff were acquired. After the political upheavals in Eastern Europe, Oschmann pushed for the telephone directory market in Hungary. Other locations followed in Austria, Switzerland, Slovenia, Croatia and Poland. Under his leadership, the number of employees rose from 48 to over 2000. In 2003, Oschmann handed over the operational business of the publishing house to his two children, Michael and Constanze . At this point in time, Müller-Verlag published 19 million telephone books in 325 editions a year. Oschmann is seen in the media industry as a public shy, so that there are hardly any photos of him. Oschmann himself remained a partner in the company.

In addition to the publication of telephone books, Oschmann began to get involved in local radio in 1984 when private broadcasting services began in Bavaria. From 1990 onwards he participated in local television programs, including television stations in the new federal states such as Sachsen Fernsehen in Chemnitz . Today he holds shares in around 50 percent of Bavarian local radio stations, including the nationwide broadcaster Antenne Bayern and the nationwide radio station Radio Melodie , as well as the local broadcasters Radio Charivari , Radio Gong and the supplier program for local radio stations BLR . In 2006 a working group was founded within the framework of the broadcasting holding Die Neue Welle in order to bundle the strengths of the largely independent regional broadcasters and to establish themselves more strongly across Germany, especially in the field of new media. Oschmann had received numerous broadcasting licenses from the Bavarian State Center for New Media (BLM). According to his own admission, Oschmann is close to the CSU without being a member and has “a good connection” with the state headquarters. He is also known as the "Leo Kirch der Radios".

In February 2010 it became known that the Nuremberg edition of the Munich tabloid Abendzeitung and the associated advertising paper Der Frankenreport will be sold to media-regional , an Oschmann company. A close cooperation between the two editions in Munich and Nuremberg should be maintained for the future. The title was retained, the jacket part was still obtained from Munich. The Federal Cartel Office granted approval on March 1, 2010 for the acquisition of control applied for on January 27, 2010. When in 2011 a son of the Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann worked as rapper Jackpot u. a. An editor of the Nuremberg AZ wrote an article about drug abuse. However, this never appeared there, since publishing director Harald Greiner, citing the "close friendship of the two families Herrmann and Oschmann", prevented the publication against the bitter resistance of AZ editor-in-chief Andreas Hock. There was no intervention by Hermann or his ministry. However, through an exchange of content with the former Munich sister paper, which is still connected, the article was published by the local AZ. The background to the self-censorship only came to light after the Nuremberg AZ was discontinued on September 29, 2012 for economic reasons and Olaf Przybilla published an article about it in the Süddeutsche Zeitung.
