Life

Berling was born on November 6, 1869, the son of the manufactured goods dealer Paul Berling and his wife. He completed his school career in 1889 with the Abitur and studied shipbuilding and mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Berlin-Charlottenburg . After completing his studies, he got a job with the Imperial Navy in 1895 . In 1898 he was appointed master builder in the machine construction department of the Imperial Shipyard in Kiel . On April 4, 1904, after much hesitation and weighing up the situation , the Reichsmarineamt commissioned the Berling naval construction council to design and build a submarine for naval warfare. As a result, Berling developed a two-hull coastal submarine at the Germania shipyard in Kiel . Berling's design is based on the three trout-class submarines that were successfully tested in 1902 and then exported to Russia . Construction finally began in April 1905 and on December 16, 1906, the submarine developed by Berling was put into service as the U 1 and the first German military submarine by the Imperial Navy.

On March 14, 1908, Berling was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, IV class, for his services .

Berling was from 1904 to March 1912 chief engineer and head of the submarine department of the torpedo inspection of the Reichsmarinamt. During this time he was instrumental in numerous submarine developments and in the construction of the German submarine weapon . On April 1, 1912, he became operations director for new buildings at the Kaiserliche Werft Kiel.

Gustav Berling died in a bomb attack on Cologne in March 1943.
