Gustav Friedrich Hertzberg (born January 19, 1826 in Halle (Saale) ; † November 16, 1907 there ) was a German author, historical and regional historian. He taught at the University of Halle .

Life

Gustav Friedrich Hertzberg was the eldest son of the out -rounders originating Medical Council Gustav Ludwig Hertz mountain and its from Erfurt originating wife Friederike born, Bucholz. From 1835 to 1843 he attended the educational department of the Francke Foundations , where his father worked as a doctor, and passed his Abitur there at the age of 17. At the request of his mother, Gustav Hertzberg then studied theology at the University of Halle . In the autumn of 1844 he began studying Oriental and Ancient Philology at the University of Leipzig . He returned to the University of Halle in 1847, where Gottfried Bernhardy and Heinrich Leo were among his teachers. Hertzberg was on 30 November 1848 Doctor of Philosophy PhD . In 1850 he passed the state examination and took a position as an assistant teacher at the Pedagogy of the Francke Foundations, where he taught until 1855. In 1851 , Hertzberg completed his habilitation at the University of Halle with the writing De rebus Graecorum inde from Achaici foederis interitu usque ad Antoninorum aetatem for the subject of ancient history . In 1854 he entered the Masonic lodge " To the Three Swords ", in which, among other things, he held the office of speaker for 24 years. He was also a member of the National Liberal Party . The Prussian minister of culture, Moritz August von Bethmann-Hollweg , summoned him to Berlin in 1858 , where the historian was editor of the Prussian weekly newspaper until 1860 . An editorial activity at the national liberal Hallische Tageblatt followed in the years from 1866 to 1871.

After his return to Halle, he was appointed adjunct professor for ancient history on April 4, 1860 ; the Philosophical Faculty applied for a full professorship several times (1875 and 1882) to no avail. It was not until 1889 that an ordinariate for the subject was set up, which was then assigned to Eduard Meyer , and Hertzberg received the status of a full honorary professor in the same year . The historian was also a member of the historical commission of the Province of Saxony (from 1895) and chairman of the Saxon-Thuringian History Association .

Hertzberg held lectures until shortly before his death. He died on November 16, 1907 and was buried in the Stadtgottesacker (Dept. II). He left behind his second wife Auguste Ziebarth, whom he married in 1862 after his first wife, Rosalie Zimmermann, whom he married in 1854, died giving birth to their son Heinrich in 1859. The first marriage had two daughters and a son, and the second marriage had another daughter. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his death, a memorial plaque was unveiled on November 16, 2007 at the house where he died at Bernburger Strasse 2 in Halle.

Writing activity

Hertzberg published primarily writings for a wide readership, mostly on the history of Greece and Byzantium . He achieved regional importance with his works on the history of his hometown, in particular the three-volume work History of the City of Halle an der Saale (1889-1893).

Award

In 1901 Gustav Friedrich Hertzberg was given honorary citizenship of the city of Halle on the occasion of his 50th anniversary as a doctor. Five years later, on the occasion of his 80th birthday, he was honored with the naming of a street in Halle and the award of the title of Privy Councilor , the award of which he was intended to be awarded 10 years ago, but which he had refused. In addition, Hertzberg was a bearer of the Red Eagle Order 4th class and the Prussian Crown Order 3rd class.
