Gustav Holzmann (born April 17, 1926 in Atzgersdorf (today: Vienna ), † February 18, 1973 in Vienna) was an Austrian economic and social geographer, historian and publicist.

Life and career

Gustav Holzmann was born in Atzgersdorf near Vienna as the son of the machinist August and the master tailor Maria Holzmann. He spent his childhood and youth in Groß-Enzersdorf ( Lower Austria ), and passed his school-leaving examination at the Realgymnasium Franklinstraße in Vienna- Floridsdorf . Before that, he had to serve as an air force helper for two Viennese anti-aircraft batteries for a year . Immediately after graduation, he was posted to the Eastern Front for military service. In March 1945 he suffered a serious wound in East Prussia; thereafter he was in English captivity from May 1945 to February 1946 in Hamburg . From March 1946 Gustav Holzmann studied geography and history as a regular student at the philosophical faculty of the University of Vienna . Due to sudden, severe consequences of his war suffering, he was forced to interrupt his studies from 1949 to the end of 1952. As a result, one hundred percent war invalidity was determined. From this point on, until his death, he was bedridden for most of the day, but still achieved his doctorate in philosophy in 1956.

His final resting place is at the Mauer cemetery in Vienna. In 2017 in was Liesing the Gustav-Holzmann-square named after him.
