Gustav Heinrich Lübbe (born April 12, 1918 in Engter , now part of Bramsche , Osnabrück district , † May 18, 1995 in Bergisch Gladbach ) was a German publisher and owner of Bastei-Verlag .

Life

Lübbe was born the son of a farmer. After school he trained as a typesetter . He took part in the Second World War from 1939 to 1945 and graduated from high school in Belgrade . Most recently he had the rank of captain in the air force . After the end of the war, from 1947 to 1953 he was editor (head of the feature section) of the Neue Tagespost in Osnabrück (today part of the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung ). In 1949 he married Ursula Lübbe nee Sprenger (born July 14, 1922 in Osnabrück; † August 19, 2016 in Bergisch Gladbach).

In 1953 he bought the small Bastei publishing house in Cologne and moved from Osnabrück to Bergisch Gladbach. Over time, he achieved love and family novels , westerns (e.g. Lassiter ), homeland novels and similar publications, most of which can be assigned to the penny novel , as well as comics (e.g. Bessy , Felix and Wastl ) and puzzle books Millions of copies. The most important hit series among crime thrillers is Jerry Cotton . After he had received a lot of attention with his paperbacks , Lübbe added Gustav Lübbe Verlag to his publishing group in 1963, with mainly culturally and historically oriented book editions.

His son Stefan (1957-2014) and Cornelia Lübbe (* 1952) emerged from his marriage to Ursula Lübbe . From 2006 until his death in 2014, his son Stefan was the sole shareholder of Bastei Lübbe Verlag . From 1995 to 2006 his daughter Cornelia was also involved in the company.
