Gustav Artur Eduard Johann Poel (born August 2, 1917 in Hamburg ; † January 17, 2009 there ) was a German submarine commander in World War II , manager of the German steel industry and management consultant.

Life

After graduating from high school in Hanover , Gustav Poel joined the German Navy on April 3, 1936 ( Olympic crew ) as an officer candidate . He received his training on the sailing training ship Gorch Fock and the light cruiser Emden . On September 10, 1936, he became a midshipman on 1 May 1937 after completion of the cadet course at the, Marine Mürwik for Midshipman and on 1 July 1938 Midshipman transported. During the Spanish Civil War , he served six months on the Tiger torpedo boat , which was in Spanish waters at the time.

When he was promoted to lieutenant at sea on October 1, 1938, he switched to the submarine fleet, where, after completing general submarine training, he initially served as a second officer on watch on U 27 . From May 1939 to June 1940 he served as a second watch officer on the U 37 . After a year at staff positions, in which he was promoted to first lieutenant at sea on October 1, 1940 and among other things worked for the commander of the submarines in Kiel and the German liaison officer to the Italian leader of the submarines in Bordeaux , he was in the June 1941 tactics instructor with the 25th U-Flotilla . On June 3, 1942, he became the commander of the U 413 submarine . On February 1, 1943, he was promoted to lieutenant captain. With U 413 he was at sea for a total of 290 days during five patrols. Along with four other ships, he sank the British destroyer HMS Warwick (D25) on February 20, 1944 . On April 16, 1944 he became company commander at the Mürwik Naval School . On January 26, 1945 he came to the staff of the commanding admiral of the submarines Hans-Georg von Friedeburg . There he was taken prisoner on May 9, 1945.

After he was released from captivity on October 6, 1945, he studied metallurgy and foundry engineering at RWTH Aachen University from 1946 . In the winter semester 1948/49 he became a member of the Corps Montania Aachen. In 1951 he completed his studies as a Dipl.-Ing. from. Active in the steel industry since 1951, from 1963 to 1970 he was a board member of various companies in the Rhenish steel industry. In 1970 he moved to the management consultancy firm Knight Wegenstein AG in Düsseldorf, where he worked until his retirement in 1982.
