The submarine front clasp was donated in bronze by the Commander-in-Chief of the Navy, Grand Admiral Karl Dönitz , and in silver on November 24, 1944 .

It could be awarded to all crew members of submarines that have proven themselves in the front line.

The elongated clip, made of fine zinc, consists of a center piece, a scaled-down version of the U-boat war badge (1939) , the laurel wreath of which is covered with two crossed swords at the bottom . To the left and right of the center piece there are six oak leaves, slightly above each other . The back of the clasp is smooth.

The clasp was worn directly above the medal buckle on the left breast.

According to the law on titles, medals and decorations of July 26, 1957, wearing the version of the Third Reich in the Federal Republic of Germany is only permitted without National Socialist emblems.
