The sleeve shield Kuban was a combat badge of the German Wehrmacht from the time of the Second World War .

Background to the creation of this award

It was donated by Adolf Hitler on September 20, 1943 and awarded to the German participants in the fighting along the Kuban bridgehead (February to October 1943). Anyone who has been involved in the fighting on the Kuban bridgehead on land, in the air or at sea since February 1, 1943 and has fulfilled one of the following requirements, received the Kuban shield:

  • Participation in a main battle
  • Wounding
  • uninterrupted use of at least 60 days of combat

"Participation in the following fighting days counts as participation in a main battle:

  • 1. – 11. February 1943: Battle of Krasnodar
  • February 1 to March 4, 1943 and April 26–31. March 1943: Defensive battles to prevent enemy enclosures on the left wing of the army
  • 3rd - 28th February 1943: Defensive battles against enemy landings in Novorossiysk
  • 12-15 February 1943: Defensive battle at Abin
  • 2nd-8th March 1943: Defense at the Troitskoye bridgehead
  • 10-16 March 1943: Battle of Abinskaya
  • 4th-18th April 1943: 1st defensive battle near Krymskaja with defense against bondage attack against the Kurka front
  • 17th to 20th April 1943: Aggressive fighting against Landenkopf Novorossiysk
  • April 29 to May 10, 1943: 2nd defensive battle near Krymskaya with simultaneous defense against enemy attack near Novorossiysk
  • May 26 to June 8, 1943: 3rd defensive battle near Krymskaya
  • July 16 to August 13, 1943: 4th defensive battle near Krymskaja, own attack and defensive battles near Neberdschajewskaja and defense against bondage attacks on the Kurka section
  • May 10 to October 9, 1943: Defense of the Novorossiysk landing assault and fighting while being dropped from the Kuban bridgehead. "

Design ideas and appearance

The size of the shield which was worn on the left sleeve was 52 × 62 mm with a cloth pad of 64 × 77 mm. The shield was made of sheet metal or fine zinc.

Award practice and award numbers

The sleeve shield was awarded by Field Marshal Ewald von Kleist on behalf of Hitler as Commander in Chief of the Wehrmacht . A total of around 50,000 pieces including a certificate of ownership and a pin were issued.

Others

According to the law on titles, medals and decorations of July 26, 1957, wearing the award in the Federal Republic of Germany is only permitted without National Socialist emblems.
