Gustav Wilhelm Georg von Hombergk zu Vach (born March 5, 1823 in Darmstadt , † June 8, 1884 in Mainz ) was a German gendarmerie officer in the Grand Ducal Hessian Gendarmerie Corps , commander of the Starkenburg gendarmerie division from 1854 to 1857, the Upper Hesse gendarmerie division from 1857 to 1867 and of the Gendarmerie Division Rheinhessen from 1867 to 1884, most recently with the rank of lieutenant colonel .

ancestry

Hombergk came from the Hessian family Hombergk. One of his ancestors was enfeoffed by Landgrave Moritz von Hessen-Kassel in 1596 with the village of Vach, today's Kleinvach . Since then it has called itself a branch of the Hombergk zu Vach family . This line received the imperial nobility in 1718 , which was confirmed by Hombergk's father in 1780 and in 1825 for the last time. The family provided civil servants and scholars in particular, but also officers.

Family and private

Hombergk's parents were the later Grand Ducal Hessian President of the Court Court of the Starkenburg Province in Darmstadt, Friedrich Christian Gustav von Hombergk zu Vach , and his wife Johannette Sophie, nee. Teaching Hombergk married Auguste Christiane Luise Ernestine Emmerling on October 18, 1848 in Darmstadt and, after her death, married Julie Valentine Henriette Franziska Wernher on August 14, 1865 in Gießen. He had a son and three daughters from his first marriage and a daughter from his second marriage.

After the early death of two half-brothers, he and another half-brother, Major Eduard Karl Ernst Albrecht von Hombergk zu Vach, owned the Fideikommiss Kleinvach near Bad Sooden-Allendorf . Both maintained their officers' households from the income.

Career in the military and gendarmerie

Hombergk's officer career began in the Grand Ducal Hessian Guard Chevaulegers Regiment , in which he last served as Rittmeister . In 1854 he was transferred to the Grand Ducal Hessian Gendarmerie Corps, which was also organized militarily. In 1867 he was promoted to major and four years later to lieutenant colonel. In the gendarmerie corps, Hombergk was deployed from 1854 to 1857 as commander of the Starkenburg gendarmerie division. He held the same function from 1857 to 1867 in the Gendarmerie Division of Upper Hesse and from 1867 to 1884 in the Gendarmerie Division (from 1872 Gendarmerie District) in Rheinhessen.

War effort

During the Baden Revolution , Hombergk took part in the suppression of the uprising in 1849 as an officer in the Grand Ducal Hessian Guard Chevaulegers Regiment.

During the German War of 1866, in which the Grand Duchy fought on the southern German side, Hombergk was deployed in the headquarters of the VIII Federal Corps as the commandant of the field gendarmerie . This unit operated between Frankfurt am Main and Würzburg .
