Gyula Szekér

Gyula Szekér (born September 25, 1925 in Szombathely , Vas county ; † December 17, 2015 ) was a Hungarian politician, initially with the Party of Hungarian Working People MDP (Magyar Dolgozók Pártja) and finally with the Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party MSZMP (Magyar Szocialista Munkáspárt) , who was among other things Vice Prime Minister. Szekér was also an expert in the field of aluminum production and published numerous books on this.

Life

Vocational training and ministerial official

Szekér, whose father was employed as a stoker for the state railway MÁV ( Magyar Államvasutak ) , began training as a chemical laboratory technician in the aluminum factory Ajkai Timföldgyár és Alumíniumkohóba after attending elementary school in Celldömölk in 1940 . Between 1945 and 1946 he was a member of the National Small Farmers Party (Nemzeti Parasztpárt) and in 1947 volunteered in a youth brigade to build railways in Yugoslavia.After his return in April 1948, he joined the Communist Party (Kommunisták Magyarországi Pártja) and after its dissolution the party of the Hungarian working people MDP (Magyar Dolgozók Pártja) .

He then completed a chemistry degree from 1948 , which he completed in 1950. After completing his studies, he worked for five months at the Metallurgical Research Institute (Fémipari Kutató Intézet) before he was an apprentice at the Department of Electrometallurgy at the Moscow Institute for Light Metals and Iron between October 1950 and October 1953 .

After his return, Szekér worked in January 1954 at the Hungarian-Soviet bauxite and aluminum company MASZOBAL (Magyar-Szovjet Bauxit Alumínium Rt.) And in July 1954 he moved to the Ministry of Heavy Industry , where he was first vice-section head and then in September 1954 was appointed head of the section for the aluminum industry. He was then from November 1955 to July 30, 1956 Section Head in the Ministry of Chemical Industry and from July 30, 1956 Vice Minister for Chemical Industry.

However, on April 22, 1978 he succeeded Ferenc Havasi as a member of the Committee for National Defense (Honvédelmi Bizottság) .

After leaving the government, he acted as director of the MSZH (Magyar Szabványügyi Hivatal) Office for Standardization from June 27, 1980 until his retirement on March 15, 1989 .
