Hardness is a German biography by Rosa von Praunheim about the German martial artist and former pimp Andreas Marquardt , based on his 2006 published autobiography Hardness - My way out of the vicious circle of violence . In the film, Marquardt is portrayed by Hanno Koffler . The film premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival on February 6, 2015 in the “Panorama Special” section. The cinema release was on April 23, 2015.

action

Andreas Marquardt's difficult childhood shaped life. As a 2-year-old, his father doused him with water and put him on the balcony when it was below zero. When he was six years old, his mother began to abuse him. He channels his aggression as an adult in martial arts. When he is offered to work in the red light district, he finds himself in a world of money, violence and prostitution.

Traumatized by sexual experiences with his mother, he appears rude and bossy towards his wives, which some people are amazed at. When he meets the accountant Marion, he wants her to work for him as a prostitute. Bored with her dreary day-to-day work, she agrees.

Marquardt later served eight years in prison for his machinations. Nobody sticks to him except Marion, whom he even sent to the streets on Christmas Eve. In spite of everything, she loves him and encourages him to find his way back to a middle-class life. When he was released, both found a martial arts school in Berlin-Neukölln, where Marquardt still teaches children and young people.

reception

The Berliner Zeitung ruled that "this film hurts". It shows "violence that is not perpetrated with fists" and is "a more subtle, but no less cruel crossing of borders, from which no one is immune". The reviews of Marquardt's life in “theater-like backdrops in black and white” are “chamber plays of social brutality”. The film website kino.de describes the film as an "unusual, equally massive and haunting document [that] also bears the typical Praunheim signature". The magazine Stern judged that the film was a "shocking, depressing and at the same time encouraging work". In particular, the depiction of the abuse situations was "sometimes difficult to bear". It is emphasized that the topic of sexual violence by mothers has rarely been a topic in the cinema up to now.

Awards

At the Berlinale, the film received 3rd place in the Panorama Audience Award. He was also shortlisted for the German Film Prize 2015 . Although the film itself was not nominated, Hanno Koffler received a nomination for best leading actor. Katy Karrenbauer was awarded the special prize "Jaeger-LeCoultre Homage to German Film" for her role.
