history
Written sources about the construction and history of the castle are not known. Based on ceramic finds, it is expected to have been made in the early Middle Ages . Since a large part of the complex has now been dismantled, the survey by Ludwig Hölzermann is an important source of the castle complex . As a sketch by Wilhelm Tappe shows, Hölzermann has not seen the whole complex.
In 1951 test excavations were carried out by the Antiquities Commission for Westphalia . At that time, residents could still remember the castle wall. Ceramic shards from the 10th and 11th centuries were found in the embankment.
In 1968 the owner was leveling a large part of the wall. The Burgstall was then placed under protection and bought by the Büren district .
Todays use
The Burgstall is now a nature reserve and is extensively managed as a meadow . The remains of the wall are covered with dense bushes.
description
The roughly rectangular core plant of 90 × 65 m was preceded on the south and west sides by a wall in the south-east at a distance of 20 m. An elevation north of the entrance on the west side of the core plant is interpreted as the remains of the tower. On the outside of the rampart, the excavation of a mortar wall was discovered in 1951, which, like its backfill, rested on a stone pavement.
A water point was created within the core plant.
Say
There are some legends about the castle . It is about a giant who lives in the castle, interacts with a giant from Verne and is finally driven away.
There is also a local version of the legend of Widukind , who secretly attends a Christian service , in which the duke is saved by the giant from Boker after the Franks recognize him.
