No ice hockey was played during the Second World War, but in the 1950s the club, renamed Lokomotíva , returned to regional play. Before the 1960/61 season, all sports game classes in Czechoslovakia were reorganized. From 1973 the club took part in the 1st SNHL, the divided second division of Czechoslovakia. At the end of the 1990/91 season, the runner-up title could be achieved in this league.
With the reorganization of the leagues as part of the independence of Slovakia, the HK VTJ Spišská Nová Ves was included in the top division of Slovakia, the Extraliga . But just two years later, they were relegated to the second division, the first division . Another year later, the club reached the championship of the first division and managed to return to the extra league. Until 2000, the team stayed in the Extraliga and twice reached the playoff quarter-finals.
