Schematic comparison with today's carriers

The HMS Queen Elizabeth is the first of two new aircraft carriers of the Queen Elizabeth class of the British Royal Navy (RN). It should be operational from 2021 and replace the three Invincible- class aircraft carriers with its sister ship HMS Prince of Wales . The Queen Elizabeth include not only the Russian Admiral Kuznetsov class of the largest ever built in Europe warships.

The ship went on a test drive for the first time on June 26, 2017 for sea trials. The test flight operations began in 2018, and an initial operational capability should be given in 2021.

A first deployment is scheduled for 2021 in the South China Sea .

construction

According to plans from May 2012, the HMS Queen Elizabeth , as originally planned, was designed to operate the STOVL version of the F-35 (version F-35 B ). In the meantime there were plans from autumn 2010 to prepare the carrier for the operation of helicopters or conventional fixed-wing aircraft, for details see the article about the class.

According to data released by the Ministry of Defense on July 25, 2007 , the dimensions of the ship are:

  • Length: 284 m
  • Width: 73 m
  • Displacement: 65,000 tons
  • Speed: 27 knots
  • Crew: 1,450 (including flight crew)
  • Airplanes: 40 (max.)

The two-island system in the Queen Elizabeth class is unique in the world and should lead to better and smoother processes on the flight deck.

The construction costs were £ 3.1 billion (approx. EUR 3.5 billion).

history

Construction of the future HMS Queen Elizabeth began in 2009; Because of the sectional construction, one cannot speak of a keel laying in the classic sense. Their first captain, Commodore Jerry Kyd, was named in February 2014. On July 4, 2014, the ship was by Elizabeth II. Baptized in memory of the eponymous warship from the time of the world wars , which in turn by Elizabeth I was named. From July 17, 2014, the ship was no longer in the assembly dock, but was equipped to float until 2016.

The ship went on a test drive for the first time on June 26, 2017 for sea trials. The official commissioning took place on December 7, 2017 in the presence of the Queen . Only then did the British Royal Navy confirm a leak in the carrier, where around 200 liters per hour enter the drive shaft seals. The leak is to be repaired by the manufacturer BAE Systems in early 2018.

After the first helicopter flight test campaign had already taken place, the first aircraft landed on September 25, 2018 off the US east coast on the "Q", which was an F-35B of the United States Marine Corps . Another helicopter flight test campaign also took place in the western North Atlantic in autumn 2019. The first landings of British F-35B Lightning took place there on October 13, 2019.

Planes

As a replacement for the Hawker Siddeley Harrier procured UK combat aircraft of the type F-35B Lightning . When used as a pure helicopter carrier , the Carrier Air Wing (CVW) consists of a mix of transport, naval and combat helicopters of the types Chinook , Merlin and Apache from all three branches of the armed forces, depending on the mission .

The first squadron of the carrier's CVW is the 820th Naval Air Squadron , armed with Merlin HM.2 ; it is permanently assigned to the ship. The squadron's tradition dates back to World War II and the unit's Fairey Swordfish torpedo bombers were instrumental in sinking the Bismarck in 1941 .
