The -haired bat water ( Myotis fimbriatus ) is a kind of mouse ears ( Myotis ) within the bats (chiroptera). It is endemic to the People's Republic of China .

features

The hairy water bat is a small species of bat with a comparatively short tail. It reaches a head-torso length of 42 to 52 millimeters and a tail length of 37 to 48 millimeters. The hind feet are 8 to 10 millimeters long. The ears measure 14 to 16 millimeters and are therefore about as long as the animals' heads. The forearm length is 37 to 40 millimeters, the calcar is umgekielt and the flight membrane inserts at the ankle. The belly side of the tail skin (uropatagium) is covered with short hair and on the rear edge of the same there are comb-like short hairs. The tibia is about 17 millimeters long, so the length of the foot is more than half the length of the lower leg. The fur is very short and dense, on the back it is dark brown and gray and on the belly brown-gray with a slight whitish tinge. There are white spots in the basal area of the tail.

The skull reaches a total length of about 15 millimeters. It is flatter in the front area than the skull of the water bat ( Myotis daubentonii ). The reduced premolars of the upper jaw stand in the row of teeth or are slightly leaned inwards.

distribution

Distribution of the hairy water bat according to Smith & Yan Xie 2009

The hairy water bat is endemic to the central and southern People's Republic of China . It has been found in the provinces of Anhui , Fujian , Guizhou , Jiangsu , Jiangxi , Sichuan , Yunnan and Zhejiang as well as in Hong Kong .

Way of life

Little information is available about the bats' way of life and ecological demands. It is believed to be a colony-forming species that roosts in caves. She probably hunts near her resting places.

Systematics

The hairy water bat is assigned to the mouse ears (genus Myotis ) as an independent species . The scientific first description comes from the German naturalist Wilhelm Peters in 1871, who together with the Chinese water bat ( Myotis laniger ) by means of three individuals from Xiamen in the province of Fujian in the Catalog of the Mammals of China by Robert Swinhoe as Vespertilio fimbriatus described . Some of the kind in a very close relationship with the was whiskered bat ( Myotis mystacinus ), the East Asian water bat ( Myotis macrodactylus ) and the long-fingered bat ( Myotis capaccinii ) and discussed integration into one of these types.

Apart from the nominate form, no subspecies are distinguished within the species .

Hazard and protection

The species is classified by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) as not endangered ("least concern") due to the comparatively large distribution area and the lack of risks for a collapse of the population. No current data is available on the stocks and populations, and there are no known risks that could endanger the species.
