Haffen is the smallest municipality (district) of the small town of Rees on the right bank of the Rhine in the Kleve district , North Rhine-Westphalia .
geography
The municipality is largely structured agriculturally. Haffen to include the peasantry Lorkenhof, Woyerhof, Bruckshof, stopping Dahl and Averforth. The western part of the municipality is bounded by the Rhine , the northern part by the Reeser Meer, the south-eastern part by the village of Mehr . Years of sand and gravel mining resulted in large bodies of water around the municipality.
Name and story
Haffen means "to the standing water", what is meant is the water of the Rhine. The word is derived from the Low German word "Haff". In the real sense, a lagoon (see also lagoon ) denotes a brackish water area on the sea coast separated by a spit or by offshore islands .
The Hafti settlement was first mentioned in writing in 1031. At that time the settlement belonged to the parish Renen . The location of the church of Renen cannot be precisely located today. We know that it was near the Rhine and that it was destroyed by flooding. Instead of rebuilding the church, it was decided to build a church at a higher location in Hafti, in the Haffenslok corridor , and consecrated the church to the patron saint Lambertus , the bishop of Maastricht (approx. 635 - approx. 705). The Lambertus Church was first mentioned in a document in 1446 . From this time on, the name Renen no longer appears in the written sources.
The former municipality of Haffen-Mehr of the Rees district was split up on January 1, 1975 on the occasion of the North Rhine-Westphalian municipality and district reform. While an area of 8.32 km 2 with 2516 inhabitants (Mehrhoog) was reclassified to Hamminkeln , the city of Rees received the main part with 22.55 km 2 and 2678 inhabitants.
coat of arms
The joint coat of arms of the villages of Haffen and Mehr shows a protective shield, the upper half of which is provided with the two patron saints: Right St. Lambertus (Haffen - the Bishop of Liège / Maastricht) and left St. Vincentius (More - Saint Vincentius of Saragossa) . Both saints have raised their right hand to take an oath. The lower half shows parts of the coat of arms of the Counts of Cleves , a silver central shield on red, above a golden lily scepter star .
