More is a district of Rees in the Kleve district , North Rhine-Westphalia .

geography

More to include the peasantry Lohrwardt, Overkamp-Ree and Moshövel.

The municipal area is largely structured very agriculturally. The western part of the municipality is bounded by the Rhine . Larger forest areas are to the east of the village. Years of gravel mining also resulted in large bodies of water around the municipality. Several campsites have been located on the Lange Renne (in its northern part) since the 1950s. The southern part of the Lange Renne has been designated as a nature reserve since 2010 . In addition to the Lange Renne nature reserve, there is another one in the Mehr district, the Bellinghover Meer .

history

Documented in 947, the Oberhof was given by Mehr - curtis in Mere - probably from the Merovingian crown estate, by Liutgard († 953), Otto the Great's daughter , to the St. Viktor Stift in Xanten , according to the Kalendarium necrologicum Xantense. This farm , today's Gasthaus "Zur Rose" , was located in a flood-free location in the foreland of the Rhine and is considered to be the namesake of the village of Mehr. In the church of St. Vincentius there are two memorial stones built, which presumably date from the 9th century. The two inscriptions refer to Wolfrad and Reginlind, probably members of the noble family of the Oberhof in Mehr. They do not contain the year of death, but are intended to remind of the memorie , the annual memory, which the priest of the private chapel had to keep for the named each year on the day of death.

The church in Mehr is in the inventory book of the St. Viktor Stift among the parish churches of the deanery Xanten, almost all of which existed at the time of Charlemagne - around 800.

During the Seven Years' War on August 5, 1758, in the Battle of Mehr (French Affaire de Meer) in the area of today's Mehrhoog, the Brunswick Lieutenant General von Imhoff defeated the French troops under General Chevert .

On February 29, 1784 the Bislicher dike broke . Large areas of today's urban area were flooded. The people escaped to the granaries and roofs.

The municipality of Haffen-Mehr was split up on January 1, 1975 on the occasion of the North Rhine-Westphalian municipality and district reform. While an area of 8.32 km 2 with 2516 inhabitants (Mehrhoog) was reclassified to Hamminkeln , the city of Rees received the main part with 22.55 km 2 and 2678 inhabitants.

traffic

More is connected to the trunk road network by the federal highway 8 . More is connected to an extensive network of cycle paths.

Nature reserve Lange Renne and Bellinghover Meer

Long run

The district of Mehr has the 13 hectare nature reserve Lange Renne (also Lange Rinne) , which has been designated since 2010 . It is a tributary of the Rhine . The oxbow lake has an area of 0.193 square kilometers with a maximum depth of 10.49 meters. The southern part of the east bank forms the border to the Mehrhoog district of the city of Hamminkeln .

The origin of the Lange Renne is attributed to the shifting of the Rhine river, although more recently an artificial excavation during the early Roman presence on the right bank of the Rhine to create the Drusus Canal has been considered. Only the southern part of the oxbow lake is designated as a nature reserve due to the well-developed floating leaf vegetation and larger reed beds.

Bellinghover Sea

The Bellinghover Meer nature reserve, which has also been designated since 2010, is located on the edge of the lower Rhine terrace. It is fed by the Lange Renne and flows into the Hagener Meer, which flows into the Rhine via the Haffensche Landwehr .

The Bellinghover Meer and the Haagener Meer are remnants of the Sonsfeld loop, a meander of the Rhine. It originated in the late Mesolithic or early Neolithic . From the 10th to the 13th century, the Rhine left its old bed and flowed over the Visseler Schlinge from the Bronze Age and the Lange Renne into the Bellinghover Sea. The drainage via the Haffensche Landwehr has been proven by a document from Deichschau Rees since 1580.

In addition to carp , tench , pike and perch , the Bellinghover Sea is home to numerous species of white fish . They form the food base for grebes , cormorants , herons and kingfishers . Crayfish and many different types of river mussels are evidence of the high quality of the water. The Bellinghover Meer has a narrow reed border . In the northern area as well as in the southern shallow water area there are floating leaf zones .
