Geographical location

The rooster is located in the Kassel Basin in the north of the West Hessian Depression, immediately north of the village center of Holzhausen, through which the small Eder tributary Pilgerbach flows. The mountain is bordered by the village to the west, south and south-east. The federal motorway 49 leads past west in a north-south direction . The state road 3221 leads south past the mountain and the village.

Castle history

The Hessian Count Werner IV († 1121) is said to have built a castle on the rooster around 1100. It is mentioned for the first time in 1123 and was probably a tower castle, with a bailey on the lower plateau. The complex was probably destroyed as early as 1294 and fell into disrepair after 1346. The castle ruins are still reported in the 16th century, and at the beginning of the 19th century, when material for road construction was brought from there, stones and mortar remains, remains of the castle moat and were found human bones. Today nothing is left of this system.

useful information

The rooster has about two hectares of forest; the basalt rocks and its steep southeast flank are not forested. The way to the top was re-established by wooden houses in 1999 and 2000 and is easy to hike. From the summit there is a good view of Holzhausen and the surrounding area.
