On April 1, 1997, the 3-point rule was introduced in German hockey , which was also applied to the hall for the first time this season: a win now counts 3 points (instead of 2), a draw still 1 point .

Ascent

The four regional league champions were promoted: DHC Hanover (North) and Rot-Weiss Köln (West) moved up into the North group, the Zehlendorfer Wespen (East) and HC Heidelberg (South) moved into the South group.
