Hannes Helmke (born May 10, 1967 in Heidelberg ) is a German sculptor who creates bronze sculptures .

Life

After completing an apprenticeship as a wood sculptor, Hannes Helmke, born in Heidelberg in 1967, completed a postgraduate course in fine arts at the Alanus University for Art and Society in Alfter, which he completed in the summer of 1998. Since then, Hannes Helmke has lived and worked as a freelance sculptor in Cologne . He spends the summer months on the island of Spiekeroog ; the originality and freedom that prevail there in daily life, being in nature are important sources of strength and inspiration. All designs are created on Spiekeroog and implemented in bronze in Cologne.

Helmke is co-initiator and board member of the Spiekerooger art scholarship "Zeltplatz-Residenz", which sponsors art projects in public space once a year.

Hannes Helmke's artistic theme is people and their point of view in the world. The body is an expression of being I and of self-awareness. Helmke's original inspiration was the elongated evening shadows of the human figure. The works with extremely elongated limbs and very large feet from the first years of creativity have now developed into more naturalistically proportioned figures. The basic idea is still: How do people stand in life? How do people present themselves to the world, in observed and unobserved moments, alone and in a group or crowd? For Hannes Helmke, feet and legs stand for the human being, the body above them for the spirit human. The plastic ears are symbols of connection with the world, of perception; so are the great hands. In doing without a face, Helmke's desire for the greatest possible association of the viewer becomes clear.

Helmke's best-known work is the 3.5  m high bronze sculpture "De Utkieker", which has been looking out over the sea from a dune on the island of Spiekeroog since 2007 and urges the island to be preserved as a gem.

Since 2013, the large bronze sculpture “Le rêveur sur une grande chaise” has welcomed visitors in front of the Maison des Arts in Lingolsheim in Alsace .

In 2015, Hannes Helmke designed the Jean Claude Letist Prize of the Cologne Aids Aid, which was awarded to Conchita Wurst on July 3, 2015 on the occasion of the last Cologne AIDS gala .

At the end of 2015, Hannes Helmke made 10 bronze sculptures depicting the late Cologne comedian Dirk Bach . The sculptures are loaned to major donors who financially support the Dirk Bach House of the Cologne Lebenshaus Foundation.
