Hans-Georg Wegner

Hans-Georg Wegner (* 1968 in Dessau ) is a German theater director , dramaturge and librettist .

Wegner has been the opera director at the German National Theater in Weimar since the 2013/2014 season . In the 2021/2022 season, Wegner is to take over the general management at the Mecklenburg State Theater .

Life

Hans-Georg Wegner first came into professional contact with the theater as a stage technician at Theater Nordhausen .

The German reunification allowed Wegner first time a study of musicology , sociology and theology at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg . In 1997 he graduated from the Technical University of Berlin with a degree in musicology and a degree in theater studies from the Humboldt University in Berlin . During his studies, Wegner gained his first artistic experience through internships with the director Peter Konwitschny and the dramaturge Werner Hintze.

Wegner wrote numerous opera libretti , including for the opera "Wir" by Christoph Staude , which premiered in 2006 at the Munich Biennale .

From 2000 to 2007 Wegner worked as a dramaturge at the Semperoper . There he worked with the directors Katharina Thalbach , Andrea Moses , Vera Nemirova , Sebastian Baumgarten and Philipp Himmelmann , among others .

In 2007 Wegner came to the Bremen Theater as chief dramaturge , where he subsequently became head of the music theater and artistic director for the 2010/2011 and 2011/2012 seasons . During his time as chief dramaturge at the Bremen Theater, a new world premiere was staged every season.

Wegner has been the opera director at the Deutsches Nationaltheater Weimar since the 2013/2014 season , where he took over the dramaturgy for the productions Don Giovanni , Hansel and Gretel and Hoffmann's stories .

In June 2020, the Mecklenburg State Theater announced that Wegner would take over as the successor to Lars Tietje as general director of the Schwerin Theater alongside Christian Schwandt .

Hans-Georg Wegner is married to the German theater director Nina Gühlstorff and has a daughter.
