Hans Gerd Ruwe
Hans Gerd Ruwe (* 1926 in Osnabrück ; † 1995 there ) was a German stonemason and sculptor . His works, mainly executed in bronze , have become known far beyond the borders of his hometown.
After finishing school, Ruwe joined the military and did not return from French captivity until December 1948 . He then learned the stonemason trade from Emil Jung . From 1951 he studied at the Werkkunstschule Hannover and at the Hochschule der Bildenden Künste in Hamburg . In 1954 he passed the master craftsman's examination as a stonemason and, after studying abroad in Italy , Holland and France, settled in Osnabrück as a freelance artist.
Ruwe is known for his large and sometimes multi-figure sculptures. The best-known work is often called the Bürgerbrunnen , which is located near the Osnabrück market on the Peace of Westphalia square. Other works in downtown Osnabrück are the washerwoman at the Vitihof or the animal court in the zoo.
Not only in his hometown, but also in numerous other north German places, such as in Gütersloh , Bad Iburg , Quakenbrück , Werlte or Blomberg .
Two nativity scenes by Hans Gerd Ruwe are known, a large block nativity scene made of artificial stone (patinated cast stone), which can be seen in the nativity scene exhibition in the Diocesan Museum, and on the other hand a multi-figure house nativity scene modeled from different woods. Both works are privately owned and are counted among the most important works of Osnabrück nativity scene.
Hans Gerd Ruwe died shortly after completing the citizen fountain for the city of Osnabrück in 1995 in his hometown.
