Hans-Joachim Harder (* 1943 ) is a German officer ( Colonel retired), political scientist , military historian and archivist .

Life

Harder passed his Abitur in 1963 at the Carl-Schurz-Schule in Frankfurt-Sachsenhausen and then joined the armed forces . From 1966 to 1973 he was an officer in the telecommunications and electronic reconnaissance of the Air Force. In 1978 he was taught by Dieter Oberndörfer at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Freiburg im Breisgau on the subject of “The Canton of Jura. Causes and steps to solve a minority problem in the Swiss political system "on the Dr. phil. PhD.

From 1978 to 1981 he was responsible for public relations for the 1st Air Force Division in Meßstetten. In 1981 he worked at the Military History Research Office (MGFA) in Freiburg im Breisgau. From 1987 to 1991 he was Defense Attaché for Belgium and Luxembourg at the German Embassy in Brussels . Afterwards he was employed as head of military policy in the Office for Studies and Exercises of the German Armed Forces in Bensberg and Air Force Attaché for Russia in the German Embassy in Moscow . In 1997 he became head of research area III at MGFA. From 2001 to 2003 he was a colonel in the General Staff Service, head of the “Training, Information, Specialized Studies” (AIF) department and, most recently, under Beatrice Heuser, he was deputy head of the Military History Research Office (MGFA) in Potsdam. From 2004 to 2008 he was Senior Scientific Director at the Bundesarchiv-Military Archive in Freiburg im Breisgau .

Harder was co-editor of the magazine military history. Historical Education Journal . He was also chairman of the Military Archives Committee of the International Commission on Military History .

He is married to Jeannine Harder, b. Cartal, and father of the NDR presenter Sandrine Harder-Hoffmann.
