Hans-Joachim Hoppe

Hans-Joachim Hoppe (born September 22, 1945 in Hilden near Düsseldorf ) is a German political scientist , journalist and Eastern Europe expert.

Studies and PhD

He did his Abitur at the renowned Helmholtz High School in Hilden . He completed his studies in history, Slavic studies and political science in 1977 with a doctoral thesis on “German- Bulgarian relations in World War II”. The work is based on the files of the Foreign Office in Bonn / Berlin and the military archive in Freiburg, and appeared in 1979 in the studies of the Institute for Contemporary History in Munich. The dissertation was awarded a prize by the Southeast European Society in Munich and the University of Cologne.

career path

After completing his doctorate with Günther Stökl , one of the leading Eastern European historians , Hoppe was a lecturer at the seminar for Eastern European history at the University of Cologne . From 1976 to 2010 he was head of the department for German as a foreign language, Russian and other Slavic languages ​​at the Volkshochschule Köln .

In addition to his work, he took part in projects on the history of Bulgaria and on coming to terms with National Socialism , including a project by the Institute for Contemporary History on the number of Jewish victims of the Holocaust .

He also published numerous articles in the magazines " Osteuropa " and " Südosteuropa ", in the magazine " Außenpolitik " edited by Gerhard Wettig . Journal for international issues ”as well as in the reports of the Federal Institute for Eastern and International Studies , Cologne (today Foundation Science and Politics Berlin). He is currently observing the latest developments in Russia, Eastern Europe, Central Asia and the Caucasus and mainly publishes in the Eurasian magazine .

In addition, he deals with questions of multiculturalism , in particular the German and Ukrainian diaspora, using the example of the USA and Canada. His article on Ukrainians in Canada was also translated into Russian and published on Liveinternet.ru.

In September 1997, in the final phase of the regime of Serbian President Slobodan Milošević , Hoppe was deployed as an OSCE election observer in Serbia.

Hoppe is a member of the Association of Eastern European Historians, the Southeast European Society (Munich) and the German-Canadian Society .
