Hans-Joachim Kiderlen

Hans-Joachim Kiderlen (born December 6, 1943 in Hamburg ) is a German diplomat and theologian . Kiderlen was most recently Consul General in Karachi and then from 2008 to 2017 Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Georgia .

Life

Kiderlen studied law and history from 1964 to 1969 . After the assessor examination , he joined the foreign service in 1972 and was initially employed at the Permanent Mission to the European Communities and later at the German Embassy in Moscow and at the Embassy in Lomé in Togo . In 1980 he moved to the international law department of the Foreign Office in Bonn , which was followed by a position at the Consulate General in San Francisco from 1984 to 1986 . Then Kiderlen worked again in the international law department, of which he was deputy head until 1990. He then worked for the Protestant Church. In 2001 he returned to the diplomatic service and became the German envoy in New Delhi . From 2004 to 2006, Kiderlen served as the German ambassador to Uzbekistan and from 2006 to 2008 as consul general in Karachi, Pakistan .

After retiring, Kiderlen was elected chairman of the federal board of the Indo-German Society in 2008. He still holds this office today. Shortly afterwards, he apologized for a remark that Berlin State Secretary Sawsan Chebli perceived as sexist on the occasion of a society event in October 2017 - he had not expected such a young and beautiful State Secretary. The incident, which Chebli had made public on Twitter and Facebook , had generated considerable media coverage and debate about sexist behavior by men.

Church career

From 1984 to 1988 Kiderlen studied part-time theology . In 1988 and 1995 he passed the theological exams at the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland . In 1990 Kiderlen, who had been given leave of absence from the Federal Foreign Office, switched to the service of the Evangelical Church in Germany and was head of its liaison office in Brussels until 1994 . He then served as consistorial president of the provincial Saxon church until 2001 .

In October 2008 Kiderlen took over the office of Episcopal Visitator of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Georgia, the following year he was elected Bishop of this church and was introduced to his office on December 13, 2009. His successor as bishop was Markus Schoch in 2017 .
