Live and act

Jensen's family came from a family of merchants and pastors in Schleswig-Holstein on his father's side and from the Rhineland on his mother's side. He passed his Abitur in 1939 at a secondary school in Leipzig. He was then drafted for military service until 1945 in World War II . He began studying human medicine in Leipzig in 1942 and moved to Frankfurt am Main in 1946 . In 1949 the state examination and doctorate followed with the title: "Inhibiting effect of the gonadotropic chorionic hormone on the fat-splitting ferments".

In 1949 he began his psychiatric-neurological training with Karl Kleist in Frankfurt am Main and in 1950 moved to Joachim Gerlach's neurosurgical department ( Werner Wachsmuth's surgical clinic ) in Würzburg . In 1954 he sat in England with Wylie McKissock and at the College of Ostheopathy and became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine . From 1955 he was a specialist in neurosurgery and qualified as a professor in 1959 for surgery , especially neurosurgery. Since 1965 he was an associate professor in Würzburg. From 1959 to 1961 he worked and researched in Chicago in the field of pediatric neurosurgery, traumatology , stereotaxic and neuroradiology , with Louis V. Amador, Paul Bucy and Percival S. Bailey and in Montreal with Theodore Rasmussen .

Jensen was full professor and director of the neurosurgical clinic of the Christian-Albrechts-Universität (CAU) in Kiel from 1971 to 1990 , which became independent with his appointment. His predecessor Elmar Bues (1920–1970) headed the neurosurgical department as part of the surgical clinic. Jensen was the first to hold a chair for neurosurgery in Kiel.

Jensen was a co-founder of various national and international societies and scientific journals, with a particular focus on pediatric neurosurgery. 1980 to 1982 he was President of the German Society for Neurosurgery and 1983 to 1987 President of the Association of German Neurologists.

As an author, he was significantly involved in Erich Sonntag's 1957 work “Outline of the entire surgery”. This was followed by textbooks on pediatric neurosurgery and the standard work "Lanz-Wachsmuth: Practical Anatomy of the Head". Further scientific publications were created in parallel. He also published a teaching guide for physiotherapy after intervertebral disc operations . He himself also treated with manual procedures, which repeatedly meant that surgical interventions could be avoided. As one of the first physicians in Germany, he recognized the diagnostic revolution of cranial compunt tomography .

Since 1953 he was with the surgeon and anesthetist Reta Jensen, geb. Pauls (1919–1987) married and had four children. In 1993 he married Ingrid Pries, b. Hartz (1941-2007).
