Hans-Werner Schmidt (born November 16, 1951 in Sprendlingen , today a district of Dreieich ) is a German art historian , author, exhibition organizer and former museum director .

Life

After graduating from the Goethe School in Neu Isenburg , Hans-Werner Schmidt studied at the University of Fine Arts in Kassel from 1971 to 1976 and completed his studies with the state examination as an art teacher. In this profession he worked in Marburg from 1977 to 1978. Here he studied art history, European ethnology and education at the Philipps University since 1976 . He received his doctorate in 1982 with Martin Warnke on the subject of promoting the patriotic image of history through the connection for historical art .

After a traineeship at the Hamburger Kunsthalle from 1982 to 1984, Schmidt worked from 1985 to 1992 as a curator at the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf . He then moved to the Kunsthalle zu Kiel , whose director he was until 2000. In addition, he held the position of executive chairman of the Schleswig-Holstein Art Association in the Kiel years . From May 2000 until his retirement in April 2017, Schmidt was director of the Museum of Fine Arts in Leipzig . During his term of office, the opening of the new museum building occurred in 2004 and in 2005 the establishment of the Leipziger Kreis , an association of directors of German art museums.

In 2006/2007 Schmidt was also a visiting professor at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena .

Schmidt has been married since 1989 and has two children.
