Hans-Wilhelm Ebeling
Hans-Wilhelm Ebeling (born January 15, 1934 in Parchim ) is a former German politician ( DSU , CDU ). He was Minister for Economic Cooperation of the GDR in the cabinet of Lothar de Maizière .
Life
After graduating from high school in Forst / Lausitz , Ebeling completed an apprenticeship as a locksmith at the state railway repair shop in Cottbus from 1952 to 1954 . From 1954 to 1957 he studied mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Dresden and from 1957 to 1962 Protestant theology at the Karl Marx University in Leipzig . After that he was vicar in Vetschau until 1964 , pastor in Lieberose 1964–1976 and from 1976 at the Thomaskirche in Leipzig.
He was considered particularly loyal to the GDR government agencies and was named to another Leipzig pastor by Stasi officers as an example of problem-free cooperation. While peace prayers had been taking place in other churches in the inner city since 1982, the St. Thomas Church remained closed to the protest movement until October 9, 1989. Asked by Christian Führer to show solidarity with the other pastors, he tried to prevent the upcoming Monday prayer at the beginning of October 1989. Only under great pressure, the church council of St. Thomas's Church forced a vote, did he open the church gates on October 9th.
After the fall of the Wall , he co-founded the Christian Social Party in Germany (CSPD) alongside Peter-Michael Diestel and, in 1990, the German Social Union (DSU), of which he became chairman. From March to October 1990 he was a member of the People's Chamber and from April to October Minister for Economic Cooperation. In July he resigned from the DSU. Until early retirement in 1991, he worked for the Konrad Adenauer Foundation .
Hans-Wilhelm Ebeling was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class in 1998.
