On April 16, 1919, he led a coup in Libau against the Latvian government of Kārlis Ulmanis , but managed to escape. The overthrow was not supported by the Entente and the German General Command of General Goltz . A new German-friendly government was formed under Andrievs Niedra , in which Latvians had a majority, but Baltic Germans were strongly represented. Manteuffel-Szoege fell during the coup of the Baltic State Armed Forces to liberate Riga from the Red Army . He was considered by many to be the most capable political and military leader of the Baltic Germans.
