Hans Baumhauer (born October 31, 1913 in Munich ; † June 11, 2001 in Freiburg i.Br. ) was a German painter , glass painter , mosaic artist and sculptor .

He was the son of the painter Felix Baumhauer (1876–1960). In his artistic work he dedicated himself in particular to sacred art and was involved in numerous new church buildings in southern Germany , Switzerland , Luxembourg and Israel .

Life

Hans Albert Felix Baumhauer was born as the third child of Felix and Julie Baumhauer. He attended elementary school and then the Maximiliansgymnasium in Munich . He showed an artistic talent early on. Even as a teenager he had the opportunity to support his father in carrying out larger tasks. After the high school years, he first went to the Mayer'schen Hofkunstanstalt in Munich, the most famous South German workshop for glass painting and mosaic . At the age of 16 he began to take part in numerous artistic competitions. At the age of 19, he received the highly endowed 2nd prize in the competition for the artistic decoration of the congress hall in the German Museum in Munich . He attended the Munich School of Applied Arts for two years . In 1939 he was drafted into the Wehrmacht when the war began . On September 11, 1942, he married Maria Wolff, daughter of the publisher Kurt Wolff, in Munich . The couple settled in Freiburg im Breisgau . In 1944, their son Jon Baumhauer was born in Freiburg. After the war, Hans Baumhauer married Alix Mohr in Garmisch-Partenkirchen on August 24, 1950, the daughter of the industrialist Adolf Friedrich Mohr, who came from Mannheim. In 1954 the son Michael Peter Cyrill was born. A year later, the son Carol Stephan Alexander followed and in 1957 the daughter Viola Pia Cornelia.

Hans Baumhauer's works can be found in Germany and abroad far beyond Freiburg . After the war, numerous new churches were built, on which Baumhauer worked. It emerged windows , mosaics and frescoes in over 60 locations in Germany and abroad. So he worked on the restoration of the stained glass windows of the Freiburg Minster . Other works from Freiburg include the mosaics and stained glass windows of St. Martin's Church on Rathausplatz, the windows of the old and new chapels of the Loretto Hospital , but also the landmark of the Löwenapotheke at Bertoldsbrunnen .

The focus of his work was stained glass . Especially in the 1950s and 1960s, he devoted himself to the art of mosaic . Ultimately, Baumhauer surprised with abstract sculptures. In addition to this work, Baumhauer created a large number of paintings.

Hans Baumhauer created altarpieces , church portals and also took on sacred sculpture. Baumhauer's work was not limited to the church. He created mosaics and sculptural works for numerous public buildings at home and abroad. Above all, the facade design of the Überlingen town hall should be mentioned .

He received numerous international commissions. The window of the great synagogue in Jerusalem, which was created in collaboration with Prof. Heim from Zurich, should be emphasized.
