Hans Eckstein (born May 3, 1939 in Halberstadt ) is a former German rower and rowing trainer.

Career

Eckstein began his active rowing career at the Sports Club of the University in Leipzig and was active for this 1956-1964. In 1961 he was able to win the title at the GDR championships in Grünau with the Leipzig eight. He also secured together with Peter Mrachacz , Manfred Scholz and Hans Müller in the coxless four Vice title behind the boat TSC Oberschöneweide I. In 1963 he secured together with Werner Riemann , Heinz Weigel and Kurt chair man in the same place the title before 1964 was runner-up again.

In 1964 he also completed his training as a certified sports teacher at the German University of Physical Culture (DHfK). From 1965 he was a trainer at SC Einheit Dresden . Only a year later he came to the rowing association as a management coach and looked after various teams over the years.

Under his leadership the two without a helmsman and the four without a helmsman became world champions at the 1966 rowing world championships. After the four-man without a helmsman became European champion in 1967, he also won the race at the 1968 Summer Olympics . In addition, the four-man with helmsman secured the silver medal. In 1969 the two without a helmsman celebrated the European championship. With the four without a helmsman, he secured the world title in 1970 and victory at the European championship in 1971. He was also successful at the 1972 Summer Olympics . Eckstein celebrated his second Olympic victory as a coach. In 1973 the four-man without a helmsman was again European champion. In 1974, 1977 and 1978 the four-man with helmsman trained by Eckstein won three world championship titles.

After the fall of the Wall and the subsequent reunification of Germany, Eckstein went abroad like many of his colleagues. Like Elmar Antony, he accepted a coaching position in Austria . As the former head coach of the GDR rowers, he was assigned connections to the doping system in the GDR . In 1991 he took up a coaching position at the First Viennese Rowing Club . In 2000 he resigned from all coaching positions. Eckstein was then active as a sports coordinator in the Austrian Rowing Association until 2001 , before he resigned after the poor performance of the Austrians at the 2001 World Rowing Championships .

Private

Eckstein is married, has three children and works as an amateur filmmaker and photographer in his free time .
