Hans Georg Borst

Hans Georg Borst (born October 17, 1927 in Munich ) is a German emeritus for surgery.

Life

Hans Georg Borst, the son of the long-standing professor of pathology at the Ludwig Maximilians University Max Borst , grew up in Munich. He began studying medicine there in 1947 before moving to the United States . From 1950 to 1953 he studied at Harvard Medical School , where he received his MD in 1953. 1953/54 Borst worked in the Department of Surgery at Stanford Medical School and until 1956 at the Harvard School for Public Health . He then returned to Germany and received his Dr. med. at the Surgical University Clinic in Marburgto which he remained loyal until 1958. From 1958 to 1968 Borst was the senior physician in charge of thoracic surgery at the University Clinic in Munich. In 1968 he moved to Hannover Medical School , where he worked as a full professor of thoracic surgery . One of his companions at this institute was Rudolf Pichlmayr . In 1971 he headed the 107th meeting of the Association of Northwest German Surgeons . In 1972 Borst took over the management of the department for thoracic, cardiac and vascular surgery at the MHH . After 24 years in office, he retired in 1996 .

Borst made significant contributions to the development of heart valve , pediatric heart and coronary surgery. From 1983 onwards, thoracic organ transplants were started on a large scale under Borst's direction. In 1987 Borst carried out the first combined heart-lung transplant in the German-speaking area. The surgical department under his direction became the leading research institute for transplant medicine in Europe . Hans Georg Borst found international recognition for his achievements.
