Hans-Georg Musmann (born August 14, 1935 in Wiedelah ) is a German electrical engineer and professor of electrical engineering . His main area of work is audio and video coding. Among other things, the audio coding standard MP3 was developed under his leadership .

Life

Musmann obtained a diploma in electrical engineering from the Technical University of Braunschweig (then: Technical University of Braunschweig) in 1962 . In 1966 the doctorate followed in Braunschweig . From 1966 to 1973 he worked at the Institute for Telecommunications at the TU Braunschweig, where he dealt with digital communication systems and especially with source coding . In 1970 he completed his habilitation and became a lecturer .

From 1973 he was professor at the University of Hanover and head of the Institute for Theoretical Communication Technology and Information Processing and from 1988 member of the board of directors of the Laboratory for Information Technology. He mainly dealt with video and audio coding. He has written over 50 research reports and holds 15 patents . In 1977 he contributed to the development of the standardization of the digital transmission of fax signals. At the same time he continued to develop video telephony ( ISDN ) procedures .

In 1981 he was visiting professor at the University of Hangzhou in China and in 1984 at the University of Pretoria in South Africa . From 1988 to 1992 he was the head of the ISO MPEG / Audio research group. a. developed the audio coding standard MP3 . He also played a major role in the development of the latest generation of mobile communications such as GPRS and UMTS . Today he is a professor emeritus at Leibniz Universität Hannover .

Musmann is a member of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen , the German Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech) , the Academia Europaea London, the European Academy of Sciences and Arts Salzburg and the Braunschweig Scientific Society .

Since 1956 he has been a member of the Braunschweiger Wingolf student association .
