Hans Heinrich Wägmann (born October 12, 1557 in Zurich , † around 1627 in Lucerne ) was a Swiss painter, draftsman and cartographer of the Renaissance .

Life

Hans Heinrich Wägmann was born in Zurich in 1557 as the son of the trader Heinrich Wägmann and Katharina Stampfer. Nothing is known about Wägmann's artistic training. Jos Murer or Jakob Clauser are often named as Wägmann's teachers , but there are no reliable findings on this. Wägmann's earliest work, an ink drawing, is dated 1578. Around 1580 Wägmann joined the Meisenzunft in Zurich, shortly afterwards he began a career as a painter and worked at the Oberdorftor in Zurich - together with the painter Heinrich Ban . Stays in Basel and Alsace followed .

In 1582 Wägmann married Margaretha Geilinger from Lucerne; the marriage resulted in four sons. The family moved to Lucerne and Wägmann converted to the Catholic faith . In the period that followed, Wägmann created a choir panel for the Marienkapelle Eigenhal (lost) and in 1589 the depiction of “Riese von Reiden” in the Lucerne town hall tower. As a reward, Wägmann was granted citizenship . In 1590 he was commissioned to paint three altars for the Jesuit church St. Michael in Lucerne. In 1597, the artist and Renward Cysat created a map of the city and the surrounding area for the City Council of Lucerne. In 1604 Wägmann was commissioned to draw up a map of the Zeil rule . From 1602 it was registered in the Zuger Buch of the St. Luke Association of Craftsmen. From 1606 he worked together with his sons working in his workshop on the panel paintings for the Chapel Bridge in Lucerne. In 1617 the two altar panels “Annunciation to Maria” and “Maria with Jesus and Johannes” were created for the parish church of St. Wendelin in Greppen and are now exhibited in the Lucerne Art Museum.

Wägmann's date of death is not known, as there are no death records from the city of Lucerne from this time. His most recent works are dated to 1626. On November 11, 1628, one of his sons transferred money from his father's estate to a brother.

In addition to religious scenes and allegories, Wägmann's subjects included situations from Swiss history. Wägmann made a name for himself primarily as a glass painter, but especially as a draftsman and cartographer. He made Lucerne one of the most important centers of Swiss drawing for a while.
