Hans Hornich

Hans Hornich (born August 28, 1906 in Vienna ; † August 20, 1979 ibid) was an Austrian mathematician who dealt with analysis.

Life

Hornich, son of the philologist and educator Rudolf Hornich, attended the Vienna Academic Gymnasium and then studied mathematics , physics and astronomy at the University of Vienna . His teachers included Wilhelm Wirtinger , Philipp Furtwängler , Hans Hahn , Karl Menger and Walther Mayer . In 1929 he did his doctorate with Karl Menger with the dissertation on a two-degree connection (with Wirtinger as second reviewer ). After working as a librarian at the Mathematical Institute of the University of Vienna, he completed his habilitation in 1933 with first-class integrals on special Riemann surfaces . In 1936 he became an assistant at the Mathematical Institute at the University of Vienna. In 1945 he became a lecturer at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna. In 1949 he became a professor at the Technical University in Graz and in 1958 he moved to the Technical University in Vienna (successor to Paul Funk ), where he worked as a full professor of mathematics until his retirement in 1976. He was also an honorary professor at the University of Vienna.

Hornich was already known through his dissertation and habilitation in function theory. In his habilitation, he constructed Abelian integrals on non-compact Riemann surfaces for the first time. In the field of differential equations, he dealt with the question of the existence of solutions for partial differential equations (PDE) with continuous coefficients, shown mainly for PDE 1st order in two variables in his monograph from 1960. He also dealt with potential theory (mixed boundary value problems), infinite series and products, simple functions and risk theory. In the history of mathematics, he dealt with Bernard Bolzano . He was also known for his textbook on function theory dedicated to Wilhelm Wirtinger.

Hornich was a corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences from 1963 and a full member from 1970. In 1978 he received the Great Silver Medal of Honor for Services to the Republic of Austria . He was an honorary member of the Austrian Mathematical Society.

He was co-editor of the monthly magazine for mathematics and has been married to Michaela Rabenlechner since 1936.
