Wilhelm Wirtinger
Wilhelm Wirtinger (born July 15, 1865 in Ybbs an der Donau , † January 16, 1945 there ) was an Austrian mathematician .
Life
Wirtinger studied at the University of Vienna , in Berlin and Göttingen with Felix Klein . In 1887 he received his doctorate in Vienna with Emil Weyr ( on a special triple evolution in the plain ) and in 1890 he completed his habilitation there. In 1895 he became a professor in Vienna, but went to Innsbruck that same year . From 1905 he was again a professor in Vienna.
Act
As a pupil of Felix Klein, Wirtinger dealt with the expansion of Riemann's theory of functions , especially for theta functions . In addition, he dealt with geometry , invariant theory , number theory , mathematical physics (from statics , the theory of surface waves and rainbows to general relativity ). He also dealt with knot theory (but his results were not published until Emil Artin in 1925), where the Wirtinger presentation of knots is named after him. Known his name through the concept of Wirtinger calculus and for continuously differentiable functions with valid -Wirtinger inequality
In 1907 he received the New Year's Eve Medal from the London Royal Society . In 1906 he was elected a corresponding member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences . Since 1925 he was a corresponding member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences . In 1931 he was accepted into the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .
His students included Otto Schreier , Kurt Gödel , Johann Radon , Olga Taussky-Todd , Hilda Geiringer , Eduard Helly , Wilhelm Blaschke , Karl Strubecker , Leopold Vietoris and Hans Hornich .
In 1904 he gave a plenary lecture at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Heidelberg (Riemann's lectures on the hypergeometric series and its significance).
