Hans Jürgen von Arnswaldt was the son of the forester Georg von Arnswaldt from the originally Thuringian, later Hanoverian noble family von Arnswaldt . He grew up on the Mecklenburg forestry farm Schlemmin (now part of Bernitt ), which his father developed into a model area with exemplary silvicultural activity for 33 years as a manager . He attended the Friderico-Francisceum Gymnasium in Doberan , which he left in 1915 with a secondary school diploma to begin his military service. After the end of the First World War , he began a practical forestry apprenticeship and then went to the Eberswalde Forest Academy to study forest sciences . Before that he enrolled in the interim semester of 1919 at the University of Rostock in law . In 1922 he passed the Mecklenburg legal traineeship and in 1924 his assessor examination.

From 1924 to 1934 he managed the Altheide Forestry Office, now part of Ribnitz-Damgarten . After his father's retirement, he took over the management of the Schlemmin Forestry Office in 1934, but was drafted into military service in 1939, whereupon his father took over the management again as a substitute.

In 1945 he fled to the West with his family. From 1945 to 1949 he headed the Herzoglich Oldenburg Forestry Office in Lensahn and from 1949 until his retirement in 1962 he headed the Fürstlich von Bismarcksche Forest Administration in the Sachsenwald (58.55 km²). He spent his retirement from 1962 in Rastede in Oldenburg .
