Hans Joachim von Kleist (born April 17, 1725 , † August 29, 1789 ) was a Prussian officer and Pomeranian district administrator.

Life

origin

Hans Joachim von Kleist came from the Tychow - Dubberow line of the ancient noble family von Kleist from the rear of Pomerania . He was born on April 24, 1725 as the 4th son of the district administrator of the Belgarder Kreis and canon of Cammin , Hans Joachim von Kleist (1685-1753), Lord on Siedkow and Groß-Tychow , and Maria Agnesa von Kleist († 1759) .

Military career

Like many of his family members, Hans Joachim von Kleist wanted to become a career officer in the Prussian army . At the age of 14 he entered Prussian service in 1739, was appointed ensign in Dragoon Regiment No. 3 in 1742 and promoted to lieutenant on June 10, 1745. In this regiment he took part in the campaigns of 1740 and 1742 in the First Silesian War . He was promoted to prime lieutenant on February 1, 1752 . Since his eyesight had deteriorated considerably, he was discharged from military service on May 22, 1755 because of poor facial features .

Civil life

After his departure, he turned to agriculture. He initially took over his father's estate Siedkow , but ceded it to his mother as early as 1756, after having previously bought Münchow's Seeger estate with accessories. For this purpose he acquired the Zeblin estate from the widow of his cousin Matthias Reimar von Kleist with the approval of the court on August 26, 1757.

In 1764 he sold the Seeger estate for 26,400 Reichsthaler . He used the proceeds to purchase Gut Hoff near Cammin. In the meantime he had taken on an administrative function in the province of Pomerania : the Prussian crown had appointed him to the post of government and district administrator in the rear of Pomerania. In economic terms, however, things went downhill for him: During the Seven Years' War , the Russians who had invaded Pomerania had devastated his property; in Hoff the sheep farm burned down with 600 sheep and 20 oxen. Therefore he asked King Friedrich II for help in 1771, but was put off by him. Since he could not get any help in the country, he looked for it abroad and reported it to his king. He then went to Saxony with royal approval , but received no financial support there either. He now turned to the Viennese court, where his efforts for help were also in vain. Therefore, he was in 1772 allegedly catholic and got then the Count Pototzky a job as Landkammerrat and finally such as imperial Kreishauptmann in Gratz in Styria . Thereupon the district administrator von Kleist in Prussia was declared on January 10, 1774 all of his feudal rights forfeited.

His wife Maria Antoinetta, b. von Münchow , had stayed at home and ran Gut Hoff alone. She succeeded so well that she was able to pay off all her debts. Thereupon Hans Joachim von Kleist returned to Hoff in 1783. Both spouses then sold the debt-free estate on August 8, 1786 for 22,500 thalers. By cabinet order of August 25, 1787, Hans Joachim was then restituted to his feudal rights. He died on August 29, 1789 and was buried in the cathedral at Cammin . His wife Maria Antoinetta von Münchow, with whom he had been childless since August 1, 1755, died in 1799.
