Life

After completing his apprenticeship as a mechanical draftsman (aircraft drawing apprenticeship ) at the Pilatus aircraft factory, from 1948 to 1952, Hans Küchler, known as "Kü", did an apprenticeship in graphics at the Lucerne School of Applied Arts with Werner Andermatt and Max von Moos . He then worked for the food company Wander AG near Bern and later at PKZ in Zurich . There he became the head of the decoration department. Küchler loved everything that could fly and so the appointment as a model making teacher at the Lucerne School of Applied Arts was very welcome.

When Hugo Welti gave up his graphic work as a decorator at the men's clothing company "Kleid Frey AG" in Wangen near Olten in 1956 , he became its successor. From then on, Küchler lived in Olten, where he also met his wife Rosmarie, with whom he had a daughter.

From 1962 to 1994 Küchler was chief graphic designer at the Swiss Traffic Center . With his award-winning posters and graphics, he shaped Swiss tourism advertising for years. After an accident in 1972, he only worked part-time for the traffic control center and devoted himself to his own projects as a freelance artist in his studio at Zielempgasse 12 in Olten. In the 1960s, Küchler drew critical and political statements for the Nebelspalter .

From 1979 Küchler began to work with glass. His greatest work was for the Olten train station . This was made in the Glasi Hergiswil and completed in 1982.

Küchler worked on countless exhibitions, on catalogs and posters, helped in an advisory capacity and was a committed member of the Kunstverein Olten. He illustrated books, created signets , posters and works in the public and semi-public areas of Olten.

Küchler received numerous awards a. a. from the Department of the Interior in Bern, from the Canton and the City of Olten Art Prize, the Swiss Watercolor Prize, Comptoir Suisse in Lausanne, Art Directors Club New York. In 1986 he received the gold medal at the international humor fair in Bordighera.

The estate of Hans Küchler, a fund of drawings, watercolors, graphics, caricatures, photographs, glass works, poster drafts, SVZ archive materials and parts of his personal library were processed in the Olten Art Museum .
