Fastned BV is a Dutch company that sets up and operates a Europe-wide network of publicly accessible fast charging stations for electric vehicles along motorways.

history

Fastned was founded on February 24, 2012 in Amsterdam by Bart Lubbers and Michiel Langezaal. In April 2012 Fastned received a 15-year concession to operate 201 charging stations along the Dutch motorways. The first five stations opened in November 2013. Fastned went public on July 9, 2014 and is currently listed on Euronext Amsterdam .

In 2017, Fastned received funding commitments of 4.1 million euros as part of the federal funding program charging infrastructure to set up 25 fast charging stations across Germany. The first of these fast charging stations went into operation in June 2018. The location near the A3 in the ICE city of Limburg in Limburg an der Lahn is the first location outside the Netherlands.

In March 2019 Fastned was awarded the contract to build and operate 20 fast charging locations at Swiss motorway service areas. The concession has a term of 30 years. Also in March it was announced that Fastned had won a tender for five locations in the north-east of Great Britain. At the end of 2019, Fastned was awarded the contract for 13 locations on motorway parking lots in the Belgian provinces of Limburg , Antwerp and Flemish Brabant .

In July 2020 Fastned announced the takeover of the charging network of the competitor MisterGreen . There are 16 locations at Dutch motorway service stations, mostly in the western part of the country.

The long-term company goal is for a European charging network with 1,000 locations and several charging stations each. The hundredth location opened on June 13, 2019. At the end of 2019, the charging network comprised a total of 114 locations in the Netherlands, Germany and the United Kingdom.

The locations each have two to eight charging stations, although future extensions have already been planned at some locations. Most of the locations are covered, the roofs contain photovoltaic modules integrated in the glass , which can cover a small part of the energy requirements of the charging stations when the sun is shining and feed them into the power grid when the charging stations are not in use.

Some of the charging stations are located at partner companies, such as Van der Valk Hotels or Albert Heijn supermarkets, with which cooperation agreements have been concluded. The three locations at the Albert Heijn XL supermarkets in Tilburg , Nijmegen and Eindhoven have a more inconspicuous design without a roof and are an exception to the general concept of fast charging locations close to the motorway.

All Fastned charging stations have charging plugs according to the Combined Charging System (CCS Type 2) defined as a standard by the European Union . Many locations have at least one charging station with a maximum charging power of 150 kW. Most of the locations also offer charging stations with Type 2 and CHAdeMO charging connections.
