In 1900 Kolbe joined the Imperial Navy and began a career as an officer. During the First World War he was in command of the 3rd Torpedo Boat Half Flotilla (the II. Torpedo Boat Flotilla, equipped with powerful, modern and large boats) - an elite association of the Imperial Navy - and was highly decorated. There he represented Walter Alnor, who had been transferred to the Eastern Territories, and later Peter Matthiessen, who was active on the Eastern Front . At the end of October 1936 Kolbe became Gauamtsleiter of the Reichskolonialbund and in 1941 "honorary" SS-Standartenführer .

After the end of the war he was arrested by the British and interned in the Gadeland camp near Neumünster . After his release he first returned to Schleswig in March 1946 and then moved to his house in Hestoft near Ulsnis .
