Henri Anthony Melchior Tieleman "Hans" Kolfschoten (born August 17, 1903 in Arnhem , Gelderland province , † August 2, 1984 in The Hague ) was a Dutch politician of the Roomsch-Katholieke Staatspartij (RKSP) and later the Katholieke Volkspartij (KVP), who was, among other things, secretary and head of the party office of the RKSP before the Second World War . In the cabinet of Prime Minister Willem Schermerhorn he held the office of Justice Minister between 1945 and 1946 and during this time he reformed the courts, for example at the High Council of the Netherlands (Hoge Raad der Nederlanden) , the highest ordinary court.

He was then mayor of Eindhoven between 1946 and 1957 and was particularly committed to founding the Eindhoven University of Technology in 1956. Subsequently, he was mayor of The Hague from 1957 to 1968 and supported the construction of the Congresgebouw , which began in 1964 and 1969 ended.

Life

On June 25, 1945 he was appointed by Prime Minister Willem Schermerhorn as Minister of Justice (Minister van Justitie) in his cabinet and held this ministerial office until July 3, 1946. During this time he reformed the courts, for example at the High Council of the Netherlands (Hoge Raad der Nederlanden) , the highest ordinary court.

Kolfschoten, who had been a member of the Katholieke Volkspartij (KVP), which emerged from the RKSP since December 22, 1945, became a member of the First Chamber of the States General on July 23, 1946 and was a member of it until July 27, 1946. After leaving the government, he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of the Dutch Lion on September 17, 1946 .

On August 14, 1946, Kolfschoten was appointed mayor of Eindhoven by royal decision to succeed Anton Verdijk and held this office from September 1, 1946 to February 10, 1957.

At the same time, in 1948 he was a member of the commission set up by the Center for Political Education (Centrum voor Staatkundige Vorming) for the drafting of a party law and between July 12, 1949 and July 15, 1952, he was again a member of the First Chamber of the States General. He was also a member of the party commission for the national unity of Dutch Catholics , which was also set up by the Center for Political Education from January 1953 to January 1954 and chaired by Wim van der Grinten . As Mayor of Eindhoven, he was particularly committed to founding the Eindhoven University of Technology in 1956.

Shortly before the end of his term as mayor, the city of Eindhoven awarded him the Golden Penning (Gouden Penning) on January 30, 1957 . He was succeeded as Mayor of Eindhoven in 1957 by Charles van Rooy , the previous Mayor of Venlo .

Mayor of The Hague

By royal decision of January 7, 1957, he was appointed mayor of The Hague as the successor to Frans Schokking and held this office from February 10, 1957 until his replacement by the former Prime Minister Victor Marijnen on November 1, 1968. As Den Hague Mayor, he advocated the construction of the Congresgebouw , which began in 1964 and ended in 1969.

For his services as mayor, he was appointed commander of the Order of Orange-Nassau on May 12, 1965, and a grand officer of this order on September 2, 1968 . He also became an honorary citizen of The Hague in October 1968 .

His marriage to Rinske Titia Ferwerda on October 4, 1932 in Amsterdam resulted in a son and five daughters.
