Russiw ( Ukrainian Русів ; Russian Русов Russow ; Polish Rusów ) is a village in the east of the Ukrainian Oblast Ivano-Frankivsk with about 1100 inhabitants (2004).
The village is the only locality of the district council of the same name in Snyatyn Raion and is located on the regional road P-20 about 11 km north of the Snyatyn district center and 95 km southeast of the Oblast capital Ivano-Frankivsk .
history
The place was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1443 and was then in the aristocratic republic of Poland-Lithuania in the Ruthenian Voivodeship . It belonged to Austrian Galicia from 1772 to 1918 , after the end of the First World War it became part of Poland as Rusów , was here from 1921 in the Stanislau , Powiat Śniatyn , Gmina Stecowa Voivodeship and was only Soviet from September 1939 during the Second World War and from summer German occupation in the district of Galicia from 1941 to 1944 . In 1944 what was now Russiw came back to the Soviet Union , where it became part of the Ukrainian SSR and has been part of the independent Ukraine since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.
Personalities
The writer Vasyl Stefanyk was born in the village in 1871 and the writer and politician Mykola Plawjuk was born in 1925 .
