Hans Martens (born June 4, 1896 ; † October 13, 1980 ) was a German soccer goalkeeper . With Hamburger SV he won the German championship in 1923 .

Career

The at least two meter tall goalkeeper giant joined Hamburger SV in the North German League (Nordkreis) in the 1920/21 round. Before that he had guarded the goal for the Rothenburgsorter FK and in the 1919/20 season he took eleventh place in the Hamburg league with the FK. In addition to Martens, Ludwig Breuel, Walter Kolzen, Gustav Schmerbach, Karl Ernst, Hans Krohn and, from their own youth, Walter Brauer and Hans Rave joined the HSV league team. The new goalkeeper completed all 18 games in the league and with his new club was sovereign with 34: 2 points ahead of Holstein Kiel and VfL Altona in first place. He also guarded the case of the successful HSV in the two games for the North German championship in April 1921 against the southern district champion Hannover 96 (3: 1/8: 0). On May 22nd, he was unable to prevent the 2-1 defeat after extra time against Duisburg SpV in the final round of the German championship. By the end of March he had experienced the training work of AW Turner , from April 1921 that of Richard Girulatis .

With the newcomers Asbjørn Halvorsen and Albert Beier , Martens entered the second HSV round in 1921/22. He completed eleven of 14 games in the Alster district of the North German League. Surprisingly, the HSV team with the coaches Gerulatis (until the end of 1921), Lajos Banyai (January to April 1922) and then AW Turner came in third behind St. Georg 1816 and Victoria Hamburg. Eligible to start as defending champion, HSV was in great shape in the games for the North German championship in April / May 1922. Martens was the backbone of the defensive in the five games against Arminia Hannover, St. Georg, Lübecker BV, ABTS Bremen and Holstein Kiel and HSV won the championship ahead of Holstein Kiel and Eimsbütteler TV (in the 1-0 win against ETV, substitute goalkeeper Walter Brewer stood in the gate). The North German champions opened the final round of the German championship on May 21st with a 5-0 home win against Titania Stettin. In the semifinals on June 4th in Frankfurt am Main there was a 4-0 victory against the South German champions FC Wacker Munich . The HSV defense stood out against the powerful Wacker attackers Alfréd Schaffer , Fritz Nebauer and Heinrich Altvater . "For 90 minutes the 'bluestars' overran the HSV goal, which was well guarded by Hans Martens", noted Hardy Grüne in the documentary "From the Crown Prince to the Bundesliga". The final took place on June 18, 1922 in Berlin in front of 30,000 spectators in the Grunewald Stadium against 1. FC Nürnberg . With the international Heinrich Stuhlfauth , Gustav Bark , Anton Kugler , Carl Riegel , Wolfgang Strobel , Luitpold Popp , Heinrich Träger and Hans Sutor , the German champions of 1920 and 1921 went into the final led by referee Peco Bauwens as the favorite .

In a battle for the title of over three hours, the two opponents fought a gripping and bitter argument that was full of hooks and eyes, which had to be broken off after 189 minutes because the visibility had become too poor. It wasn't until four minutes before the end of regular time that HSV scored the 2-2 draw, which ultimately brought almost "infinite" extra time. The second final game took place on August 6, 1922 in front of 55,000 spectators in Leipzig. It was canceled after 105 minutes played at the score of 1: 1 in the half-time of extra time, as the "club" only had seven players left. Although the HSV was elected German champion in November 1922 at the DFB Bundestag in Jena with 53:35 delegate votes, the club renounced the title, which means that no champion is led for 1922.

The Victoria - challenge cup for the German soccer champions from 1903 to 1944 - won the Hamburger SV for the first time in 1923 and again in 1928.

With the Swedish player Otto Carlsson , who had landed in Lübeck due to his commercial ambitions, strengthened in the runner row, the HSV's red shorts prevailed confidently in the Hamburg Alster District League in the 1922/23 season. Martens played 12 of 14 league games and striker Otto Harder scored 36 goals in 13 appearances. In the final of the North German championship on April 29 against Holstein Kiel, Martens was one of the guarantors of the 2-0 success of the team coached by AW Turner. In the final round of the German championship, the HSV-Elf made it into the final again after successes against Guts Muts Dresden and VfB Königsberg . In the semifinals, the HSV offensive found it difficult, especially against the goalkeeping skills of Paul Gehlhaar , only in the 89th minute the game was decided with 3-2 goals. The simultaneous 1: 2 defeat of the South German champions, SpVgg Fürth , in Halle against Union Oberschöneweide was due to the accumulation of national players - Theodor Lohrmann , Josef Müller , Georg Wellhöfer , Hans Hagen , Karl Höger , Andreas Franz , Leonhard Seiderer , Willi Ascherl , Karl Auer - in the ranks of the Ronhof team, a sensation. On June 10, 1923, the HSV team with goalkeeper Hans Martens prevailed in front of 64,000 spectators in the Grunewald Stadium in Berlin with 3-0 goals and thus brought the first German soccer championship to Hamburg.

In his fourth round at HSV, 1923/24, the compulsory championship in the Alster district followed before Victoria and the ETV. The North German championship was also won with 7: 1 points against the competition Eintracht Braunschweig, Union 03 Altona, Holstein Kiel and VfB Komet Bremen. The opposing attackers conceded two goals against the HSV goalkeeper. The defending champion started the final round of the German championship with a 3-0 away win against the Breslauer Sportfreunde . In the semifinals, coach Rudolf Agte's team prevailed on May 25 with a 1-0 win against SpVgg 1899 Leipzig , making it the third time in a row in the final of the German championship. The final took place on June 9th in Berlin against the South German champions 1. FC Nürnberg. With Strobel, Wieder, Hochgesang, Träger, Sutor and Popp, the "Club" had probably the best storm series in the country and decided with hits from Hochgesang and Strobel deserved the final with 2-0 goals.

During the 1924/25 season - he had played the three championship games against SVgg Polizei (8: 1), Concordia Wandsbek (16: 1) and Eimsbütteler TV (5: 1) in August and September 1924 - Hans Martens broke his tent at Hamburger SV and joined the TV Rothenburgsort (handball). Walter Brauer replaced him during the round, in the 1925/26 season Wilhelm Blunk became the new goalkeeper of HSV.
