Hans Niemeyer (born July 9, 1834 in Magdeburg , † December 17, 1917 in Essen ) was a German judicial councilor and patron of music.

Life

Hans Niemeyer was the son of the doctor Carl Eduard Niemeyer. He attended the Gymnasium Fridericianum in Erlangen , where he graduated from high school in 1851. This was followed by private literary studies in Bayreuth for a year and then law studies in Berlin , Erlangen, Halle and Munich .

From 1856, Niemeyer was an auscultator in Greifswald for two years and then a trainee lawyer in Duisburg . In 1862 he passed the assessor exam and then worked as an assistant judge in the appeals court in Hamm , today the Hamm Higher Regional Court . From 1865 he worked as a lawyer and notary in Warburg .

In the spring of 1876 he moved to Essen , where he gained a certain reputation as a lawyer. Since 1886 Niemeyer was chairman of the Essen Music Association and made great contributions to Essen's musical life. He was the initiator and organizer of artistic endeavors in the city of Essen. He contributed to the construction of the fountain of the century in the city center of Essen and designed the lettering Rüstig zur Arbeit - happy in the rest .

Hans Niemeyer's sons from children from his first marriage to Hildegard were the judiciary and publicist Victor Niemeyer , the international law expert Theodor Niemeyer and Kurt and Berthold Niemeyer. The painter and architect and professor at the Art Academy in Munich, Adelbert Niemeyer and daughters Hildegard and Marga, come from his second marriage to Marie .

He is buried in the southwest cemetery in Essen . The tomb is still there. In the Stadtwald district of Essen, Hans-Niemeyer-Strasse has been named after him since May 31, 1930.
