Theodor Niemeyer

Theodor Hugo Edwin Niemeyer (born February 5, 1857 in Boll , Württemberg; † October 23, 1939 in Berlin ) was a German international lawyer and university professor .

Life

Niemeyer grew up in Warburg . His father was the Justizrat Hans Niemeyer , his brother Adelbert Niemeyer became an architect and painter in Munich. Niemeyer attended the Marianum grammar school in Warburg and the Görres grammar school in Düsseldorf, where he passed the school leaving examination in 1875 . He then studied law and economics from 1875 to 1878 at the University of Leipzig , the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg and the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Berlin . In the winter of 1875/1876 he became a member of the Leipzig University Choir of St. Pauli . In 1879 he passed the legal trainee examination at the Chamber Court . He completed his legal preparatory service at courts in Essen , Münster , Mülheim an der Ruhr and Berlin. In 1883 he became an assessor and later a district judge at the district court in Unna . In the three emperor year 1888 he did his doctorate and habilitation at the Friedrichs-Universität Halle on Roman law .

In 1893 he became an associate professor at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel and in 1894 professor for Roman and civil law. In 1907/1908 he was rector of the Christian Albrechts University. His rector's speech on March 5, 1907 dealt with the topic of international law and national interest . From 1894 to 1907 he taught international law at the Kiel Naval Academy . In 1912 his chair was transformed into a professorship for international law and colonial law . In 1915 he founded Niemeyer's magazine for international law . As a co-founder of the International Law Association , he was its vice-president. In addition, Niemeyer worked as a consultant for the Imperial Navy and the Foreign Office . In 1917 he was a co-founder of the German Society for International Law .

After the First World War he advocated the establishment of a just European peace order and dealt with questions of arms control .

Theodor Niemeyer had six children. He was the father of the painter Otto Niemeyer-Holstein and the architect and painter Johannes Niemeyer .
