Hans Philipp Fuchs von Bimbach (* around 1567; † August 27, 1626 in Lutter am Barenberge ) was a Danish general in the Thirty Years War . He fell in the battle of Lutter am Barenberge

Live and act

Hans Philipp Fuchs von Bimbach came from the Frankish noble family Fuchs von Bimbach . He came from the family line that had lived in Möhren Castle (today part of Treuchtlingen, then part of the Principality of Pfalz-Neuburg) since 1522 . His parents were Andreas Fuchs von Bimbach zu Möhren and his second wife Anna, geb. von Zaiskam, who married on November 28, 1566. After completing his studies, he initially worked for the Margrave of Brandenburg-Ansbach for several years. In 1614 there was a break with Margrave Joachim Ernst, who attested that he had a "presumptuous and coarse character".

From 1618 he worked - although he was a Protestant himself - initially on the part of the Catholic League as an imperial court judge and chief military officer. From 1622, however, he turned to the Protestant side, which he initially only secretly supported - for fear of his Frankish possessions being confiscated. In 1623 he was one of the advisors to Duke Christian von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel . In 1625 he entered the service of the Danish King Christian IV as infantry general .

In the battle of Lutter am Barenberge against the imperial troops under General Tilly on August 27, 1626, Fuchs von Bimbach was the highest-ranking commander after King Christian IV. The Protestants lost the battle. Fuchs von Bimbach was killed in a cavalry battle and, according to his wishes, was buried near the battlefield. A memorial stone was erected at his grave in 1908, which is now offset on Bundesstraße 248 .

Hans Philipp Fuchs von Bimbach is characterized as an educated man with diverse, including scientific interests. For example, in 1610 he had the writings of Euclid published . The mathematician and astronomer Simon Marius belonged to his circle of friends , for whom he provided two of the first telescopes as early as 1609. As a soldier, Fuchs von Bimbach was considered brave and experienced in the war. The truth of King Christian IV's assertion that he was complicit in the defeat at Lutter am Barenberge is uncertain.

His goods Kronheim , Schwaningen and Möhren passed to Jakob Ludwig von Fürstenberg (1592–1627) after his death .
